Art Fair Season is just around the corner. Over the years, many people have asked me how to get into an art fair—wondering if it's as simple as showing up with a tent and some jewelry. If only it were that easy! Today, I’m sharing the actual process of getting accepted into an art fair.
Applying for art fairs involves following specific steps and meeting deadlines. I need to submit an application that includes four photos of my jewelry, a photo of my booth, and a brief description of my work and process. Along with these, I also have to pay a jury fee. Yes, there's a cost just to apply for an art fair.
A selection committee reviews all the applications, examining the photos and descriptions to decide who will participate. If I’m selected, I then pay the booth fee. Jury fees typically range from $25 to $50. For the art fairs I join, booth fees are usually between $125 and $175 for 1-2 day art fairs. Larger art fairs that run for three to four days can be significantly more expensive.
I submitted the photo above as my booth photo. It’s crucial that this photo doesn’t include any signage displaying my name or business. In 2020, I revamped my booth display with new table coverings and wooden displays. Since a booth photo is required for applications, it’s important to periodically update it to showcase my latest jewelry collections. Additionally, everything in my booth needs to be sturdy enough to withstand the strong winds that often come with outdoor art fairs.
When choosing the four jewelry photos to submit, it’s essential to include my best work. Think of it like dressing up for a wedding or a special event—I want everything to look perfect. The photos should showcase a selection of the women's jewelry I will be selling.
